Fuel Saving TipsRoad trips have always been affordable vacations for millions of Americans, and hopefully, will stay that way. With Memorial Day Weekend and summer vacation upon us, gas prices are bound to go up and will probably hit record highs. You may not be able to control the price of gas, but there are some steps you can take to get the most out of your gas tank. 1. Keep your motor well maintained. Fuel is wasted if the engine isn’t running efficiently. You don’t want:· Dirty air filters which waste gas and cause the engine to lose power.· Worn and dirty spark plugs, causing misfiring. 2. Maintain proper tire pressure. Under-inflated tires can decrease fuel economy by as much as 3%. 3. Keep the tires aligned. 4. Replace a missing or damaged gas cap. 5. Lighten your load. More weight means more gas. Don’t keep any unnecessary items in your car. When traveling, pack lighter. 6. Slow down and drive within the speed limit. Gas mileage decreases at speeds over 60 miles per hour. 7. Calm down. Weaving in and out of traffic and driving aggressively can waste gas and wears down components. Gas mileage can decrease by as much as 33%. 8. Avoid excessive idling. Remember to turn off the car while waiting. 9. Use the air conditioner wisely. It consumes more gas. Roll down the window in slow traffic and use the A/C at higher speeds. 10. Timing is everything. Gas stations tend to change the prices between 10 a.m. and noon. Get there early if prices are expected to go up. It’s a fact that fuel economy is directly related to how you take care of your vehicle and how you drive. Maintaining your engine and modifying your driving behavior can make your road trips both safe and fuel efficient.
